Historic Brunei Footage Found; Going Viral

SOAS III Saluting the Rakyat

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

So apparently there is this video uploaded in YouTube about our history roughly a month ago. It was filmed in 1958 and it featured the Modern Architect of Brunei, SOAS III in celebrating the opening of the $7 million dollar national project, the SOAS Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan. Head of states of the Malayan Federation were invited for the momentous event. Tungku Rahman, then the prime minister too was included. So there were some visits to the Seria Oil Fields and the trade school of the early Shell company. In the footage also include the sons SOAS III, one of whom would eventually be our HM.

Remind you this was two/three decades after the Japanese occupation, and the discovery of oil and gas in Seria, Beliat. The events produced would have had lasting impact to the society then. What is more the video caught a glimpse of how our customs, our traditions, and our heritage look like. Ones which would intertwine itself to our society forever. There is also a procession happening, Regatta event in Kampong Ayer, Marhaban event, and finally the fireworks, as the fitting climax of the opening mosque ceremony.

It is something great to see part of our history come alive. It is not something we can see everyday. So without further ado here is the video.
