Last Monday, the Brunei UK Students organized and partake in the Winter Games 2012 at Cardiff. The Game-which is a yearly winter sports event-invites Bruneian students from all over the United Kingdom to compete and join in tournaments. Over three hundred students turned up for the event; though not all of them played, it gives them the opportunity to support their team, and re-kindle relations with one another.

Also, the 2012 Cardiff Winter Games is truly a historic event, as it is held for the first time-in a long time-outside of London. This paving way for other core societies to have their chance to host the big game. In this case, by the Brunei Darussalam Student Society Wales(BDSSW). The Brunei Students Union were also involved in co-organizing the event(and if you look closely enough you will find me on the far right of their website picture :D).

The theme for the event is “A New Era, A New Champion”, and it encompasses three main sports events: Futsal, Badminton and Netball. Teams involved for the former include Cardiff(the home team), DSP United, BD5, TBC, LUFBRU GG from Loughborough, Pompey Brunei, ST5, BruLeics from Leicester, Kopasus To Wed Dwegon, Angsa 9, Brumingham from Birmingham, PPB-Outs and PEDSerious. The Netball sports involved BruKeele, Cardiff Angels, LufBru, Xanana, Red Ayamz, Cardiff Knights, Bruston, Curpisang and Fuze10.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Ali Hamdani Haji Md Diah, the Director of Studies, and few representatives from the High Commissioner of Brunei in UK; This just to name a few. The event is sponsored by the High Commissioner of Brunei, Brunei Shell, DST, the Dorchester Collection, TelBru and Bag Networks.

The winter games event were held from 7am to 7pm, and it took place inside the Elite Indoor facilities at Talubont Sports Centre, Cardiff. Food bazaars were also set up by the students in a nearby location on which they served local dishes and snacks such as Nasi Lemak, Chocolate Brownies and Cakes. Extremely good food and worth the every penny!
