Dillenia’s Water Awareness Project (WAP) and a prize presentation were held on the 30th January 2012 at Pintu Malim Primary School. The project was conducted by a group of sixth form students who have represented Brunei Darussalam at the Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Programme (SEAYLP) in 2010 to the United States of America.
There were presentations and speeches given. The guest of honour at the ceremony was the Ambassador of the United States of America to Brunei Darussalam, Daniel L Shields.
Mr Shields then presented certificates and prizes to winners in the respective categories. Elissa Ling Chai Jin from Meragang Sixth Form Centre was chosen as first prize winner in the Logo Competition. Wilfred Anak Chong got 2nd spot for the Logo Competition. Both recieved prize money, certificate and trophies. While in the Slogan Competition, first place went to Hanna binti Hanafi Rustam from Amar Pahlawan Primary School, Brunei II A with her winning slogan, ‘A Preserved Kampung Ayer, A Protected Life’.
Madame Chong Li Chien, Principal of PTEM received certificate of participation from Mr Shields as well as the rest of the participating school heads.
Among the objectives of the WAP were to increase public awareness and understanding on water issues that is faced by the society, and to educate younger generations about water pollution and their role in finding solutions.
Willy Kong Wei Li, the President of Dillenia of 2010 SEAYLP Alumni, during a speech said, “WAP is a programme which includes hands-on water testing experience and educates the public on the importance of clean water in everyday life.”
He also highlighted that Dillenia’s main target audience is primary schools pupils because the younger generation are always the prime factor on the changing of mindset in the family.
The project began in July 2011, includiog Slogan Competition for primary schools and Logo Competition for secondary schools.
Also present at the ceremony were Acting Director General of Education at the Ministry of Education, Pengiran Hajah Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Kamaluddin; Acting Director of Schools, Awang Haji Kassim bin Mohd Yassin; senior officials; principals; headmaster and mistress; and parents.
